How to make Squid Masala/Calamari Masala
Squids , also known as calamari is a shell fish which is consumed in Coastal regions. Squid/Calamari masala fry is a very quick and simple to prepare which gets done within 30 minutes of time. Spices which go into Squid Masala are very less but finger licking tasty.
Recently squids is number one shell fish in my house and we love to eat it just as appetizer too. Squids cook very quickly and if you overcook them, they get chewy. So have to keep in mind that they should be cooked and removed within 10 minutes.
For Squid masala recipe, you need squid rings. We normally get them cut into rings here in Mumbai but you can easily cut them into thin rings. The spices used here are very minimal , which helps to enhance the natural taste of squids. So here goes the ingredients and recipe.
Preparation Time: 10 Minutes
Cooking Time: 10 Minutes
Serves : 4
250 grams Squids , cut into rings
2 Teaspoons Red chili powder
2 Teaspoons Turmeric Powder
2 Tablespoon Ginger Garlic Paste
1 Large size Onions, Chopped fine
3 Green chillies, slit vertically
1 Large Tomato , Cubed into small cubes
10-12 curry leaves
Handful of Chopped Cilantro(Coriander leaves)
3-4 Tablespoons coconut oil or any cooking oil
Salt to taste
Clean squid rings properly and wash with water 4-5 times.
Add 1 tablespoon ginger garlic paste, 1 teaspoon red chili powder, 1 teaspoon turmeric powder and some salt to squid rings and keep for marination for around 10 minutes.
Heat a tablespoon of coconut oil and add a tablespoon of ginger garlic paste and curry leaves. Fry on low-medium heat till the raw smell of ginger garlic goes away.
Add finely chopped onion. Fry on medium heat till it becomes transluscent.
Add slit green chiles and tomatoes. Fry till tomatoes get all mushy. Then add salt as per taste. You can also add salt at the last because during marination the salt is already added.
Add marinated squid rings and mix properly.
Cover and cook on medium to high heat for 5-6 minutes or untill squids are done. Squids shouldnt be over cooked or they turn chewy. Check in between if done.
Add chopped cilantro(Coriander leaves) and mix well and remove from heat.
Serve them with fish thali or can eat as an Appetizer.
