Goan Style Stuffed Squids
Squids also known as “Mankyo” in Goa is a popular fish served in almost every konkan side houses and restaurants. It is one of its kind which can be served as an appetizer or as a side dish in normal Thali. The stuffing of Goan Style Stuffed Squids can be anything of our choice. Sometimes small prawns are also used as a stuffing or even the veggie stuffing can be prepared.
I love to experiment with squids in different ways like sometimes I make chilli fry, sometimes gravy , or fry. One thing to keep in mind if you fry squids that, they should be immediately consumed otherwise they get all rubbery and chewy.
Last Friday, I wanted to prepare some light dinner with just some appetizers and bread. So decided to make this mouth smacking stuffed squids with Goan twist . Why I say Goan twist is that, I used popular Goan recheado masala while making the stuffing. Normally I make this masala and refrigerate so that I can use it to give some different flavor to my regular fish fry. So, let’s quickly see how to prepare it.
Preparation Time: 10 Minutes
Cooking Time: 10 Minutes
Serves : 4
Ingredients :
8-10 Small Squids
2 Tablespoon Goan Recheado masala
1 Large size Onions, Chopped fine
2 Green chillies, Chopped fine
1 Large Tomato , Cubed into small cubes
Handful of Chopped Cilantro(Coriander leaves)
Pinch of sugar(To adjust the tanginess of tomato)
Breadcrumbs for dusting the squids
3-4 Tablespoons cooking oil
Salt to taste
Method:
Clean squids properly and wash with water 4-5 times. They should be properly washed outside and inner part.
On a medium heat , add a tablespoon of oil in a cooking pot and add in chopped onions.
Sprinkle some salt and fry the onions. Salt helps evaporate the moisture from onions. Fry onions till they are translucent. Then add chopped tomatoes and chillies.
Fry till tomatoes get all mushy. Now add a tablespoon ofRecheado masala and cook for a minute.
Add chopped cilantro(Coriander leaves) and mix well.
Adjust salt and add a pinch of sugar(This balances the tanginess of tomato).
Mix and remove the pot from the heat. Allow it to cool down for sometime so that you can comfortably stuff into squids.
Take the squids and stuff the prepared stuffing in it. Do not overstuff or while frying the squids will pop open.
Seal each squid with toothpick.
Take 1 more tablespoon of Recheado masala and apply all over to stuffed squids.
Nicely coat the squids with breadcrumbs.
Heat a skillet and add 2 tablespoons of oil. Spread and place all the stuffed squids.
Fry on medium heat for 3-4 minutes and then flip. Once fried on both the sides, remove and serve.
Enjoy it as an appetizer or as a side dish.
